Restaurant in the Vault
Adaptive reuse site · concept
The brief
A restaurant inserted into a former bank vault. The brief was to honor the heaviness of the existing structure while delivering an interior that reads as warm, intimate, and alive after dark.
Design narrative
The intervention is reduced to three moves. A single curved oak banquette wraps the central room, holding the diner in a soft horizon. A single linear brass strip runs down the centre of the barrel-vaulted ceiling, glowing against the original concrete overhead — the room's only fixed light element. The vault itself — the original 1920s steel door, the cracked concrete walls, the patina of decades — is cleaned and left exposed. Lighting is warm, low, and entirely indirect; the candle on each table is brighter than any fixture in the room. The result feels old, but never tired.
