Atelier on the Meadow
Inland meadow site · concept
The brief
A working atelier and small residence for a painter, set in a south-facing meadow. The brief: north light for the studio, deep eaves over the living wing, and a building that recedes into the landscape from any approach.
Design narrative
The plan resolves as two long volumes laid against the meadow — a board-formed concrete studio along the north, and an oiled cedar residence along the south — joined by a single thin black-steel roof that runs continuously across both. A continuous clerestory band along the studio brings even northern light to the working wall; the residence wing sits beneath a deep timber eave, ground-coupled, with the meadow grass running right up to the wall. The palette is restrained to three materials — concrete, cedar, and steel — chosen so the building reads as a single quiet line in the long grass, rather than as separate volumes asking to be admired.
